The owner of this project was a fantastic carpenter in his own right having built this very fancy arbor/entrance inspired by the details used on the house to support the large overhangs. He saved himself a lot of trouble having me build the crazy gates.
The first thing to notice is that the opening is built on a drastic incline.
The second thing to notice is that the opening was too big for one gate but too small for a double gate split down the middle. We decided to use an offset design, where one gate would be smaller and used only when the extra width was needed. Looking carefully at what we came up with, you will notice that all the pieces of the two gates are different. No two pieces have the same dimension. Also the gate on the right can only open in, where the elevation drops enough to clear the “point” on the bottom of the gate.
